Problems of Pulmonary Tuberculosis among Working Population in Korea

Abstract
The problems of pulmonary tuberculosis among working population in Korea have been gradually improved with the progress of the nationwide anti-tuberculosis compaign started 10 years ago with the technical assistance of WHO. But, viewed from the standpoint of prevalence, incidence and mortality rates due to pulmonary tuberculosis, Korea still has not yet surmounted backwardness.
In view of the facts that 1) the prevalence rate is still high 2) there is no difference in prevalence rate between the urban and rural areas, 3) the rate for the urban working age population is higher than that for the rural working population, 4) there is no difference in prevalence rate among different types of work except a few susceptible persons such as those who are engaged in dusty workplace, and 5) the educational level has nothing to do with the individual¢¥s attitude toward tuberculosis control, the great possibility of being exposed to string infective sources is considered to be one of the main causes for the high rate.
The following are, therefore, highly recommended for the control of pulmonary tuberculosis for industrial workers in Korea:
1) Supervision of the so-called high risk group, i.e., persons showing as an evidence of virulent infection, prominent hilar lymphnode calcification and pleural adhesion on x-ray enamination.
2) Sepecial attention to susceptible persons such as silicotics, diabetics etc., and
3) Health education for anti-tuberculosis compaign, and
4) Medical care for the existing pulmonary tuberculosis cases.
